After months of speculation, Nintendo has revealed their upcoming console, which is expected to launch later in 2025. Once it does, the Switch 2 is going to, directly or indirectly, compete with the Steam Deck. After all, there are certain similarities between the two, which could force a lot of us to make an important decision.
Yet, I strongly believe that the comparison isn't going to be a straight-faced battle at all, and let's take a look at what will be a potentially better deal in 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2 vs Steam Deck features
As of this writing, Nintendo hasn't disclosed most details about the Switch 2, and the information we do have is based on what was shown in the official trailer. Things like hardware specifications can be discussed once we have confirmation from Nintendo, which is likely to be during the announced Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025.
When it comes to Steam Deck, there's much more clarity. The console has been out worldwide for a few years now (still no direct import to India). It's now a tried-and-tested console, and we have a fair idea about where it hits and where it misses.
I own a Nintendo Switch OLED version of my own and was lucky to be able to use my brother's Steam Deck exhaustively. The Switch 2, like the first Switch, is likely to be a better-suited console for the younger generation, given how the original's profile made it easier to carry (the Steam Deck is no 8-pound stone either). Whenever I have the Steam Deck in my hands, it does feel more premium, but it also makes me extra careful about protecting it at all costs.
I have always loved the flexibility offered by Switch's Joy-Cons. The ability to detach it from the body and turn it into a mini-controller is pretty sweet. This becomes even more interesting if you're docking your console and connecting it to a larger screen. Compare this to the Deck, which uses an integrated setup that doesn't allow you to detach the controller.
Docking is easier just by virtue of it being included with the Nintendo Switch 2. You can also use a third-party dock with the Steam Deck, and there are different options available on the market. However, having the docking unit included with the console is a bigger benefit. I can understand how some people might not use it, but I still prefer having additional support unless I am traveling.
Steam Deck vs Nintendo Switch 2: Which one should you buy
A big decision factor will be the price. Nintendo hasn't yet announced the Switch 2 price, but I don't believe there will be a wide gulf between the prices of the two consoles. They'll be operating in a similar space, and one being too expensive will tilt the decision-making of a potential buyer.
For me, the choice between any console has always come down to what games I play. I have a PS5, a gaming PC, and a Switch. A Steam Deck doesn't make too much sense for me, as what I want to play runs either on my PC or my PlayStation.
But the Switch is the only (legal) way to play Nintendo-exclusive titles. That's invaluable if you're a fan of Pokemon, Zelda, or Super Mario. This unique selection of IPs is what gives the Nintendo console ecosystem so much value.
Simply put, if you have a PC and love to play Nintendo games, go for the Nintendo Switch 2. If you're someone who travels a lot, has zero interest in Nintendo's titles and desperately loves what you play on your PC, get a Steam Deck. If you have the budget and want it all, get both.
