Unique Grimoires are special, named variants that cannot be accessed by upgrading regular books. Here are all 6 Unique Grimoires ranked with information on how to get them yourself.
6. Beothel's Grimoire
Spells:
- Corrosive Siphon (level 1)
- Arcane Veil (level 1)
- Parasitic Staff (level 1)
- Blizzard (level 5)
Beothel's Grimoire is one of the weaker Unique Grimoires and has a common rarity to reflect that. It’s by no means a bad option, it just doesn’t have the same flair as the others on this list. It may be down to personal preference, but I don’t like the ‘Staff’ spells. They’re often slow and clunky feeling. Think of them as a great-axe or other two-handed weapon option for a spell caster. On the other hand, the Corrosive Siphon allows a steady stream of poison build-up on enemie,s and the Blizzard spell is an effective frost-dealing AoE. It’s also one of the easiest Unique Grimoires to pick up in Avowed, so it’s a fine weapon for an early playthrough until you pick up something spicier.
Where to get Beothel's Grimoire
Beothel's Grimoire is one of the easiest Unique Grimoires to obtain in Avowed. It can be bought for 450 gold from Merylin, the merchant located in the Market District of Paradis (Dawnshore map).
5. Vesrik's Grimoire
Spells:
- Parasitic Staff (level 1)
- Arcane Veil (level 1)
- Bristling Frost (level 5)
- Ring of Fire (level 10)
Vesrik’s Grimoire is a ‘Fine’ quality weapon that requires Grimoire Mastery Rank 2 on the Wizard perk tree if you wish to wield its best spell, Ring of Fire. As the fire variant of Bristling Frost (shown in the image above), it allows the caster to create a ring of flames that not only deal fire accumulation to enemies but also offer a rate of damage reduction to the caster. The range of the ring is limited but it does stick to the player as they move, meaning you can trap enemies in its damage radius. Paired with the clunky Parasitic Staff and the fairly passive Arcane Veil, Vesrik’s Grimoire is fine but outclassed by other Grimoires on this list.
Where to get Vesrik's Grimoire
Vesrik's Grimoire is located south within the Emerald Stair map (west of Wavesculpt Hollow and just south of the Logging Camp). Follow the coastline southwest until you see a stone outcropping with frost plants adorning its ceiling. Shoot the plants to summon climbable platforms and gain access to the cave level above. Here, you will find Ranger Vesrik's body. Loot him for the Grimoire.
4. Anextli's Grimoire
Spells:
- Fan of Flames (level 1)
- Arcane Veil (level 1)
- Grimoire Snap (level 5)
- Missile Salvo (level 10)
Considering it’s of common quality, Anextli's Grimoire is a fantastic option that you can pick up virtually straight away in Avowed. The Grimoire Snap allows the caster to emit a short-range shock AoE that can deal Stun to targets (one of the more effective status effects that can lead to a powerful, charged attack after enemies fall to the ground). The Missile Salvo is also an effective spell that can hurl multiple missiles at targets. The beauty of this is that they actively target and seek out enemies.
Where to get Anextli's Grimoire
Travel to Berath’s Gateway (west of Paradis on the Dawnshore map). Travel upwards, through the graveyard, and keep to the left of the dirt path. Pass underneath the wooden bridge, turning left at the torch. Now, take a right away from the bridge and continue through the path until you see a banner and skeleton. Loot Anextli’s Grimoire along with the Pyromancer’s Key next to the skeleton.
3. Od Caura's Grimoire
Spells:
- Chill Blades (level 1)
- Ring of Fire (level 10)
- Returning Storm (level 10)
- Pull of Eora (level 15)
Od Caura's Grimoire is a great mid-range Grimoire to pick up once you’re a few hours into Avowed. It has the Ring of Fire spell, also featured in Vesrik's Grimoire, but kicks things up a notch with the Returning Storm spell (one of my favorites in the game). As the name would suggest, it summons an AoE thunderstorm that applies both Stun and Shock to enemies trapped within. Pair this with melee attacks, and you can take advantage of these status effects. Additionally, the Pull of Eora spell suspends enemies in place, allowing you to gain breathing room if needed and take full advantage of their helplessness.
Where to get Od Caura's Grimoire
Od Caura's Grimoire is located on the Emerald Stair map. Travel to the Pargrun Cache southwest of the Wildwoods Plateau party camp and enter the ruins. Travel through the ruins, defeating the enemies as you go, until you find the cellar chest containing the Grimoire.
2. Aurochs-Skin Grimoire
Spells:
- Blast of Frost (level 10)
- Missile Salvo (level 10)
- Freezing Pillar (level 15)
- Arcane Seal (level 20)
The Aurochs-Skin Grimoire is a fantastic option to favor, especially if you’re drawn to frost-damage spells. It includes the Arcane Seal spell, a passive ability that allows you to regenerate Essence without having to rely on consumables. Perhaps more excitedly, it also offers the Freezing Pillar spell which essentially deals a highly damaging frost AoE with the chance to inflict frost build-up and leave the target incapacitated.
Where to get Aurochs-Skin Grimoire
The Aurochs-Skin Grimoire is located on the Shatterscarp map to the northeast in Ryngrim’s Domain. This area becomes accessible once you start the main questline, ‘Face Your Fears.’ Progress through this quest and reach the boss arena. Afterward, interact with the bookshelf in the room to reveal a hidden altar on which the Grimoire is located. Make sure you grab it before exiting the area, as this Grimoire is missable.
1. Eilara's Grimoire
Spells:
- Spirit Lance (level 10)
- Pull of Eora (level 15)
- Freezing Pillar (level 15)
- Meteor Shower (level 20)
As a ‘Superb Quality’ Grimoire with access to level 15 and 20 Wizard spells, it’s no wonder that Eilara’s Grimoire is the best Unique Grimoire in Avowed. The trade-off to getting this Grimoire is that it requires Grimoire Mastery Rank 4 within the Wizard skill tree, and it is located a fair way into the main questline. It’s well worth your time, however, as it grants you access to ‘Meteor Shower’. This is one of the most powerful spells in the game, as it allows you to summon an AoE storm that emits sustained fire damage to nearby enemies. With the complementary spells, you can suspend enemies, deal repeated explosive damage, and a frost AoE. All in all, it shapes up to be a formidable elemental arsenal.
Where to get Eilara's Grimoire
Eilara's Grimoire is located furthest north on the Galawain’s Tusk map, within The Living Archives. Travel to the upper floor prayer room of the archives and loot the chest to the right of the altar to pick up Eilara's Grimoire.
