One of the new mechanics in Monster Hunter Wilds allows you to wound the monsters you are hunting, and then focus specifically on attacking the wounds to inflict major damage as well as debilitate the creatures. Here is how to focus on and attack wounds in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to inflict wounds on monsters
In Monster Hunter Wilds you can inflict wounds on the Large Monsters you fight by continuously attacking them in the same spot or part of their body, especially their weak and breakable parts. When this happens you will see a visible almost glowing red spot on the monster that indicates it is a wounded spot. Therefore, the best way to cause wounds on monsters is to continuously focus your attacks on the same spot or body part.
Even once you've completely exploited wounds you can continue hitting a monster to build up new wounds to exploit, and it is very worthwhile to do so.
How to focus on and Focus Strike to attack wounds
After inflicting a wound on a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds you can then utilize the focus feature to highlight the wounds and then intentionally target them to deal even more damage. The actual input to focus on the wounds is different by platform:
- PC: Hold Mouse Button 4 or hit Left Alt one time while looking at the monster
- PlayStation: Hold L2 while looking at the monster
- Xbox: Hold Left Trigger while looking at the monster
Doing so will highlight the wounds for you and allow you to see where they are, as well as lock your focus on them. Once you've done so, you can then choose to execute a Focus Strike on the wounded areas to inflict massive damage. Here is how to Focus Attack on each platform:
- PC: Left Shift while focused
- PlayStation: R2 while focused
- Xbox: Right Trigger while focused
This will make it so that your attacks will specifically target the wounds, regardless of where you attack with your weapon. Each time you fully exploit and damage a wound you will deal massive damage and debilitate the monster, causing it to fall to the ground and often recoil, allowing you to get quick easy hits in. It also causes the monster to drop extra items, so you should always take advantage of exploring wounds in Monster Hunter Wilds.
