Hollow Knight: Silksong, in true Soulslike fashion, throws some mighty powerful bosses and enemies your way. One of them is Lace, an exceptional duelist who first appears during the Deep Docks section of the game.
With counterattacks, lightning-fast thrusts, and swordsmanship skills out of this world, Lace can prove a tough nut to crack, but it is by far from being impossible. Here is everything you need to know to beat Lace in Silksong.
Hollow Knight: Silksong - Lace guide
Lace can be found waiting for you on a platform above a pool of lava in the Deep Docks, one of the first areas of the game. The path to her needs to be unlocked by dashing to a platform and hitting a lever, but to do that, you'll need to unlock the Swift Step first. We have a guide for that, so check it out.
Once you've found your way to her, here's what you can do to defeat her.
Never strike twice

Lace's strongest suite of attacks lies in her defense, i.e., her counter-slashes. She has two of them: after getting hit a few times, Lace takes up a defensive stance, and if you hit her, she will riposte and do two damage to yoou; the other is a lot more subtle, as Lace will slash up and to the side in a millisecond, almost certainly hitting you.
These counterattacks of hers can be devastating and cost you a lot of health, but can generally be easily avoided. To do so, never commit to too many attacks. One or two slashes are all you can get in at a time safely, with even the second one often posing a threat. Adopt a hit-and-run strategy when fighting her and try to avoid getting caught in her counters.
Use the Silkspear liberally

One of your most powerful abilities at this point in the game is the Silkspear, as it can do tons of quick and easy damage to enemies. Lace can be stunned, allowing you to get a few hits in (and maybe even push her into the lava for extra damage), and there's no better way to speed up this process than hitting her with the Silkspear.
Do keep in mind that the Silkspear uses up your healing, meaning you'll need to charge it up again to full to be able to restore HP. Lace has several attacks, which are a godsend for healing, i.e., the massive slashing attack she indicates with a huge white circle. While she's in the animation, you can easily heal, but do keep track that you don't lock yourself out of healing with the Spear.
Dash-and-hit, dash-and-hit

The most common attack pattern you'll employ during your clash with Lace is what I call “dash-and-hit.” While hit-and-run which I've mentioned above works, dashing and hitting and then dashing away is much more effective, especially against a few of Lace's attacks.
If she's spamming her counterattack from above, or if she's thrusting towards you, your best bet is to jump, dash, hit her in the back, and then dash away. What's more, if she takes up that defensive stance, you can jump and dash behind her and hit her anyway, thus avoiding getting slashed to pieces.
The only attack she has that you cannot dash over is the jumping one, alongside the telegraphed AOE slash, which you can use to either change up your position or heal.
Dashes can also help you get out of her counterattacks, no matter what they are, so make sure you always have your finger on that trigger, ready to escape whatever she throws at you. Keep in mind, dashes don't give you invincibility frames, so you can't dash through Lace or her attacks.
Oh, and a lot of her attacks can be parried, too, if that's your prerogative (you have to hit her blade at the exact moment to do so).
