Why is there a queue in Overwatch? ‘In Queue’ error message explained

Welcome back to Overwatch. Please get in line.
The Feb. 2026 Reign of Talon update for Overwatch, which removed the 2 from the game's title along with adding a slew of other new improvements, has players hyped again. With that hype, though, comes some waiting, as there appears to be a server queue. But how long will it take before you can try out one of the game's five new heroes?
Here's all we know about the Overwatch "in queue" message thus far.
Overwatch queue time explained
Overwatch players are being met with a queue on Feb. 10, 2026 because it's the launch of season one of Reign of Talon, the game's big 2026 overhaul. The queue is put in place to throttle a massive amount of players all trying to connect at once.
The queue looks to be taking players for quite some time, both on console and on PC. For example, my queue says there are 200 players ahead of me, but it's taking well over 15 minutes of waiting to get into the game.
There may also be server issues on top of the game being slammed with players, because some are reporting an "Overwatch game server connection failed" error when getting past the queue. It appears the game's surge in popularity is causing a myriad of problems.
Five new heroes and a bunch of other changes seem like enough to bring a lot of players back into the fold, or at least they're trying to, on the launch of Reign of Talon season one.
Stay tuned for more info from Blizzard about the servers. Otherwise, try waiting out your queue to see if you can get into the game eventually. Check out the season one patch notes and new hero descriptions while you wait.
