John Blanche, the artist behind 40K’s most iconic grimdark works, has died
One of the most influential grimdark artists, John Blanche, died earlier this week.
This was confirmed by IGN, which cites Trish Carden Miniatures and Design on Facebook, who were asked to declare the news on behalf of Blanche’s wife, Lin.
“John was an inspirational artist, devoted to his family and a good friend to many. Always generous with his time and knowledge, he was very well loved by all who knew and worked with him. He’ll be hugely missed,” the Facebook post reads.
“The world of Warhammer was brought to life by his vision of the grimdark setting, and I know his art meant a lot to so many of you. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that has enriched many people’s lives.”

John Blanche was one of the most influential artists working with Games Workshop and helped define the “grimdark” art style Warhammer 40,000 is known for today. His best-known work is likely his depiction of the God-Emperor of Mankind sitting on the Golden Throne, rotting away and artificially maintained by intricate, long-forgotten technologies.
As IGN writes, he never imagined this painting to depict the Emperor himself, but rather a second-hand “imagining” that would be shown to religious pilgrims coming to his supposed Golden Throne. Blanche imagined the Emperor enclosed in glass somewhere away from public attention, seeing as he probably barely qualifies as being alive at this point.
Nevertheless, this representation of the God-Emperor of Mankind is the most iconic Warhammer 40,000 image of all time, right next to 2004’s Horus vs. the Emperor by Adrian Smith.
Blanche’s works were packed with detail and gave early 40K fans amazing visual depictions of the most important characters, factions, and battles in Games Workshop’s universe. The style, known for its heavy use of acrylics and other techniques, eventually became its own thing called “Blanchitsu” by some fans, who applied Blanche’s techniques to both figures and traditional paintings.
Blanche was born in 1948. He had worked with Games Workshop since 1977 and retired in 2023.
